You have a limited window of opportunity to reverse gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis will progress into a permanent condition called periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that can threaten your gums and jawbone. Over time, patients with periodontitis may experience receding gums, tooth loss, and other consequences.

Warning Signs of Gingivitis

If you suspect that you have gingivitis, please call our office to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, check out the most common warning signs of gingivitis.

Symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Sore gums
  • Bleeding gums, especially when you floss
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Bad breath

No amount of effort will cure periodontitis. But you have the opportunity to reverse gingivitis and change your destiny.

Follow our three simple steps to get started.

Step 1: Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice a day. Whether you use an electrical or manual toothbrush doesn’t matter as long as you’re brushing for at least two minutes at a time. This will help remove plaque and food particles from your teeth and gums.

We recommend brushing your teeth before you go to sleep. Otherwise, the bacteria inside your mouth will eat any sugar particles left behind on your teeth and gums. In return, they’ll create an acid that attacks your gums and worsens gingivitis.

The last thing you need right now is sugar sitting on your teeth for 6 to 8 hours while you sleep. That’s why it’s important that you brush your teeth twice a day, everyday.

Step 2: Floss Your Teeth Once a Day

Plaque and food particles like to hide where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. That’s why it’s important that you floss at least once a day. This will help prevent plaque and tartar buildup between teeth.

When you floss, make sure that you’re gently pulling the floss against the sides of each tooth so it makes a “C” shape. Then, move the floss up and down to dislodge anything caught between your teeth.

Also, don’t be too alarmed if you see a little blood on your floss. It’s typical for patients with gingivitis to experience bleeding gums, especially while flossing. What’s important is that you’re taking steps now to reverse gingivitis and take control of your oral health.

Step 3: See Your Dentist for Routine Preventive Care

When was the last time you saw your dentist? If it’s been more than 6 months, it’s time to schedule a teeth cleaning and oral examination. During your appointment, a dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth.

While you can remove plaque at home, only a dental professional will be able to remove tartar. That’s why it’s important that you don’t skip preventive dental care, such as professional cleanings. Your dentist and their team can be your greatest ally while reversing gingivitis.
