Have you recently lost one or more teeth? If so, you may be a candidate for the dental implant procedure. Unlike other tooth replacement options, dental implants are embedded in the jawbone for the ultimate stability while you eat, talk, and laugh.
It’s normal to have questions about any dental procedure, which is why we’ve compiled this list of frequently asked questions. Also, please feel free to reach out to our office if you have a question that’s not listed here.
In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about dental implants.
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a titanium rod that we insert into the jawbone to replace the function of a natural tooth root. Once the implant fuses to the jaw, one of our dentists will place an abutment and crown over top. Our dentists may recommend dental implants if you’ve recently lost a tooth to help prevent bone loss in the jaw and to restore your smile to its full strength and function.
Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?
You may be a candidate for dental implants if you have sufficient bone density in your jaw. But don’t automatically assume you’re not a candidate if you have low bone density. Our dentists may recommend a bone graft to provide the support your implants will need.
In general, it’s also preferred that you be a non-smoker. This is because smoking inhibits the body’s natural ability to heal itself after dental implant surgery.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
A dental implant looks and feels like a natural tooth. This means that you’ll be able to continue eating your favorite foods and smiling with confidence. Unlike dentures that sit on top of your gums, dental implants are embedded in the jawbone so you never have to worry about them slipping when out in public.
When you lose a tooth, your body immediately starts to absorb the minerals in your jaw to use elsewhere. The only way to stop this bone loss in the jaw is to replace the missing tooth root with a dental implant. This tricks the body into thinking the tooth is still there.
If left untreated, jawbone deterioration can lead to a condition called facial collapse. Once the jaw shrinks to this point, it may be difficult or uncomfortable to wear dentures. That’s why many of our patients choose dental implants before their jawbones reach this level of deterioration.

What Can I Expect During the Dental Implant Process?
Your dentist will use a local anesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable and pain-free during the procedure. Once you’re numb, the dentist will make an incision along the gums and insert the titanium rod into the jawbone. They’ll then place a temporary abutment and crown over top.
Over the course of several months, the implant will fuse to your jaw through a process called osseointegration. During this time, your dentist will monitor your progress to ensure you’re healing properly.
abutment and dental crown with the permanent ones. Together, the dental implant, abutment, and crown give you the full look and function of a natural tooth.
