Do you have a cracked tooth or a large cavity? If so, you may be a candidate for a dental crown. A dental crown restores your tooth to its full strength and natural appearance. It’s essentially a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line.
You may be a candidate for a dental crown if the following situations resonate with you. But to know for sure, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with our dentist in Northville, Michigan.
Here’s what you need to know about the dental crown procedure and who may be a candidate.
Restore a Weakened Tooth
Large chips and cracks can threaten the structural integrity of the tooth. To protect your oral health, Dr. Gasior may recommend the dental crown procedure to restore the tooth to its natural strength.
If left untreated, a crack or chip in your tooth can deepen and introduce bacteria to the dental pulp inside. Once this happens, you may need a root canal to save the tooth from extraction.
Dr. Gasior may also recommend a dental crown instead of a filling to restore a tooth with a large cavity. While fillings are great for small cavities, you’ll need a dental crown to restore a tooth with significant decay. The larger the dental filling, the more you weaken the surrounding tooth structure.

Replace a Tooth with a Dental Implant
A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth root made of a titanium alloy. It works by exerting pressure on the jaw, which tricks the body into thinking the natural tooth root is still there.
Without a dental implant, the body will detect the missing tooth root and start to absorb the minerals in the jaw to use elsewhere. The body is so resourceful that it doesn’t see a need to keep the minerals in your jaw if there are no teeth left to support. But a dental implant will help prevent bone loss in the jaw, as well as facial collapse.
Once the implant has fused to your jawbone, Dr. Gasior will place an abutment and crown over the implant. Together, the implant, abutment, and crown will give you the full look and function of a natural tooth.
Improve the Appearance of Your Smile
In general, we like to preserve as much natural tooth enamel as possible. But this isn’t always feasible. For example, you may need a cosmetic dental crown to cover permanent stains, such as those caused by fluorosis. A cosmetic crown can also improve the appearance of misshapen teeth.
