Do you ever wish you could straighten your teeth without traditional metal braces? If so, ask our dentists if you’re a candidate for Invisalign® clear aligners.
Unlike metal braces, Invisalign aligners are removable. This allows you to continue eating your favorite foods during treatment. You’ll also be able to continue brushing and flossing your teeth like normal.
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get from patients.
How Does Invisalign Work?
As the name suggests, Invisalign are nearly invisible aligners that fit over your teeth. Over time, these aligners exert gentle pressure on your teeth. That way, we’re able to move your teeth into their optimal positions.
Before you start wearing aligners, one of our Invisalign dentists will walk you through your treatment plan. In general, the average patient wears Invisalign aligners between 12 and 18 months. But it’s important to remember that each patient is different.
Ultimately, your treatment time will depend on how many teeth you need to move and the complexity of those movements. Your treatment time will also depend on whether you have any bite issues, such as an overbite.
Which is Better, Invisalign or Metal Braces?
Both of these orthodontic options will straighten your teeth. But some of our patients prefer Invisalign aligners because they’re more discreet than metal braces.
You’ll also be able to enjoy an unlimited diet during Invisalign treatment. Patients with metal braces, on the other hand, need to avoid foods that are sticky and/or hard to chew. Otherwise, they may risk damaging their wires and brackets.

Do I Need to Avoid Any Foods During Treatment?
No, you won’t need to avoid any foods during treatment. This is because Invisalign aligners are removable.
After eating, make sure to brush your teeth so they don’t stain your clear aligners. Otherwise, your aligners may yellow over time and look dingy.
Likewise, your aligners may give you bad breath if you don’t brush your teeth after eating.
How Long Do I Need to Wear My Aligners?
You’ll need to wear your aligners at least 20 to 22 hours per day. Otherwise, your teeth won’t move according to schedule and you’ll fall behind on your treatment plan.
Your aligners will only work when you wear them consistently. That’s why we only recommend Invisalign aligners for patients who have the willpower and self-discipline to wear their aligners every day as directed by our dentists.
Do I Need to Wear a Retainer After Invisalign Treatment?
Yes, you’ll need to wear a retainer after treatment. This will help prevent your teeth from reverting back to their original positions.
To keep your perfect smile, you’ll need to wear your retainer as directed by our dentists for the rest of your life. For example, you may need to wear your retainer at night so you don’t lose any of the progress you made during Invisalign treatment.
