If a cavity is deep enough to penetrate the pulp (living tissue) inside your tooth, our dentists may recommend root canal treatment. During a root canal procedure, our dentists will drill a hole through the top of your tooth in order to remove infected pulp. Next, our root canal dentists will flush the inside of your tooth to remove any residual debris before covering the tooth with a temporary filling or crown. Call our office in Northville, Michigan if you experience any symptoms that would indicate you need root canal therapy.
How do you know if you would need a root canal?
You may need a root canal if you notice:
- Darkening of tooth
- Persistent toothache
- Pimple on the gums
- Swollen tender gums
- Prolonged sensitivity to cold and heat
- Pain or difficulty chewing
Is getting a root canal painful?
Before the root canal procedure, you’ll feel a slight pinch when we inject the local anesthetic to numb your tooth. Once your tooth is properly numb, we’ll begin root canal therapy. Our root canal dentist can also provide nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you feel more at ease in the dentist’s chair. Laughing gas is safe for patients of all ages and can help reduce anxiety during root canal treatment.
Can I go to work after getting a root canal?
Whether or not you return to work after a root canal will depend on your pain tolerance and other factors unique to your case. Most people are able to return to work or school the day after a root canal. In the first few hours after the root canal procedure, we recommend not eating until the numbness from the anesthetic wears off. Otherwise, you could accidentally bite your lip or the inside of your cheek.
